Science Magazine Exposes Concealed Gene-Editing Scandal in China

On Thursday, July 23, the international academic journal Science, in collaboration with the oversight platform Retraction Watch, published a dual investigation exposing the concealed death of a 6-year-old Chinese girl following an experimental gene-editing treatment. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the global scientific community, prompting international bioethics and gene therapy experts to question whether the child's parents were adequately informed of the profound risks before consenting to the procedure.

On March 24, 2025, at Xinhua Hospital affiliated with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, clinicians and researchers administered a high-stakes intervention for a young girl suffering from a developmental brain disorder caused by a genetic mutation. 

Injecting trillions of viruses carrying bespoke "base editors" directly into her cerebrospinal fluid to correct defective genes in her brain cells, the patient—pseudonymously designated as "Xiao Mei"—became the world's first known human recipient of a brain-directed gene-editing therapy and the sole clinical trial participant. To finance the development of this experimental therapy, the family was charged approximately 5.82 million yuan, equivalent to roughly 22.62 billion Vietnamese dong.

Although Xiao Mei's initial condition carried the risk of lifelong disability, it was not inherently fatal; however, after being persuaded by Qiu Zilong's research team at the Songjiang Research Institute that the base-editing tool had shown success in mice and monkeys and that the risks were minimal, her parents opted to proceed. 

Tragically, within a week of receiving the injection, Xiao Mei developed a high fever and acute kidney injury before passing away, with hospital reports pointing to a severe immune response against the viral vector as the probable cause of death. Nearly a year later, in February 2026, Qiu’s research team published a study in the British journal Nature showcasing the preclinical efficacy of the treatment in rodents and primates, while systematically scrubbing all mentions of the family's financial sponsorship and the fatal clinical outcome from the final manuscript. 

Despite formal protests and objections sent by Xiao Mei's grieving parents to Nature following publication, the journal dismissed the concerns, stating that ethical violations fell outside its data integrity jurisdiction and advising that the matter be handled by the Chinese university. A Nature editor admitted to Science's investigative team that the journal remained entirely unaware of Xiao Mei's death or the hospital's administrative sanctions during the peer-review process.

In the wake of this tragedy, seven international experts in gene therapy and bioethics reviewed the case, expressing profound disbelief that human trials were greenlit despite extremely low prospects of success and questionable preclinical efficacy. Steven Gray, a viral vector specialist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, bluntly stated that the human trial “should never have been performed,” echoing widespread alarm over why primate safety red flags and the true cause of death were omitted from public literature. 

Although one participating Chinese scientist subsequently returned over $100,000 (exceeding 2.63 billion Vietnamese dong) to the family, the case has laid bare systemic failures in medical ethics, patient rights, and scientific integrity within China's research ecosystem. Compounding these ethical breaches, investigative findings revealed harrowing audio recordings of researcher Yang Kan telling the child’s father that without subsequent data analysis and monkey experiments, injecting the viruses lacked scientific validity. 

This dynamic forces a sobering ethical reckoning regarding whether vulnerable patients are being treated as genuine medical recipients or exploited as expendable research resources to secure high-profile academic publications. While Xinhua Hospital faced only a minor financial penalty from local health authorities, and Qiu Zilong escaped public sanction, this fatal cover-up represents a severe blow to Beijing’s aspirations of capturing global leadership in biotechnology. 

Coming just years after the Chinese government pledged tighter biomedical oversight in response to He Jiankui’s infamous 2018 gene-edited babies scandal, this latest catastrophe underscores the persistent gulf between regulatory promises and institutional reality.
