At the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, Indian industrial powerhouse Bharat Forge Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding with French-Canadian heavy-lift airship pioneer FLYING WHALES to jointly develop and manufacture heavy-lift airships in India. This landmark collaboration is designed to bolster the nation's defense and strategic applications while creating a brand-new industrial ecosystem.
By bringing together FLYING WHALES' pioneering technology and Bharat Forge's six decades of advanced engineering strength and deep understanding of domestic defense needs, the alliance directly aligns with the Indian government's "Make in India" and "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" visions.
At the heart of this venture is the LCA60T platform, FLYING WHALES' next-generation heavy-lift airship capable of transporting up to 60 tonnes of cargo. Designed specifically for point-to-point operations in remote and challenging environments, the aircraft features vertical take-off and landing capabilities, operates with minimal ground infrastructure, and relies on hybrid-electric propulsion. Tanguy Lestienne, Chief Executive Officer of FLYING WHALES, noted that the platform was conceived to reach the world's most demanding locations, making it an ideal fit for India's vast geography and challenging terrain.
The strategic partnership unlocks a wide array of defense and tactical applications. The companies plan to explore logistics support for forward operating bases, the rapid transportation of oversized equipment and critical military supplies, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, and communication relay systems.
Additionally, the airships will support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, as well as rapid troop and asset deployment in remote border regions and difficult terrain. Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge, emphasized that airships will fundamentally redefine how nations move, supply, and sustain their forces, positioning India to lead that change.
Ultimately, this alliance creates a sovereign capability and an entirely new dimension of strategic mobility for the nation. By establishing a long-term manufacturing and integration ecosystem within the country, India joins a select group of nations possessing indigenous heavy-lift airship capabilities.
