FRANCE — On Tuesday, June 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a pivotal meeting with US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, bringing the Russia-Ukraine conflict back to the forefront of international diplomacy.
A Strategic 30-Minute Encounter
According to the Kyiv Independent, the 30-minute discussion marked the first face-to-face encounter between President Zelensky and President Trump in over four months. Following these trilateral talks, the three leaders joined a broader working session with other G7 heads of state, where the ongoing war in Ukraine remained the central topic of debate.
Focus on Air Defense and Domestic Manufacturing
A primary objective of the meetings was to secure and expand military support for Kyiv. President Zelensky revealed that G7 partners have reached a consensus to back Ukraine’s air defense initiatives and will actively work to strengthen the nation's protective shields.
"We discussed both air defense systems and missiles," Zelensky stated.

Highlighting a strategic shift toward self-reliance, the Ukrainian leader added that he directly addressed President Trump during the talks, expressing his strong hope that Ukraine could secure the necessary licensing from the US to domestically manufacture critical air defense systems and missiles.
Trump’s Diplomatic Pivot from Iran to Ukraine
President Trump, who confirmed he would hold further one-on-one discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart later in the day, used the platform to urge Moscow toward a resolution.
"Russia should make a deal. They have lost a lot of people and so has Ukraine," Trump remarked.

Political observers note that the US administration's recent diplomatic bandwidth had been heavily consumed by the situation with Iran. However, following the successful brokering of a landmark peace agreement with Tehran, Trump emphasized that he is now shifting his focus and will do everything possible to help resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Increasing Pressure on Moscow
Zelensky’s engagement with Western leaders at the G7 comes at a critical juncture, as Kyiv intensifies its diplomatic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to commit to direct negotiations. The Ukrainian head of state has consistently maintained the position that only President Putin possesses the ultimate authority to call an end to the hostilities.
